Green Day
Green Day is an American rock band formed in California in 1987 by Billie Joe Armstrong (lead vocalist and guitarist) and Mike Dirnt (bassist and backing vocalist). Originally, they were part of the Bay Area punk scene and went by names like Blood Rage and Sweet Children before settling on Green Day. The band’s early music was released through Lookout! Records, but they gained massive success with their 1994 major-label debut, “Dookie,” which sold over 10 million copies in the U.S.
While subsequent albums like “Insomniac,” “Nimrod,” and “Warning” didn’t match “Dookie’s” success, they were still quite popular. In 2004, their rock opera “American Idiot” became a hit with a younger audience, selling six million copies in the U.S. Their album “21st Century Breakdown” in 2009 marked a peak in their chart performance.
Green Day’s music career has been marked by various albums and projects, including a Broadway adaptation of “American Idiot.” The band has won Grammy awards and is known for popularizing punk rock in the U.S., having sold approximately 90 million records worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
