The Black Phone

“The Black Phone” is a scary movie from 2021, directed by Scott Derrickson. It’s based on a short story by Joe Hill. The film is about a kidnapped teenager who uses a strange telephone to talk to other people who were kidnapped by the same crazy person. It has actors like Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone, and Ethan Hawke.

Scott Derrickson, the director, decided to make “The Black Phone” after leaving another movie called “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” because of disagreements about how to make it. They filmed the movie over two months in North Carolina. It first showed at Fantastic Fest in 2021 and was in theaters on June 24, 2022. It made a lot of money and got good reviews. They are planning to make a sequel, which will come out on June 27, 2025.

The Black Phone Ending Explained

At the end of the movie, Finney, the young boy who’s been kidnapped by a serial killer called The Grabber, manages to outsmart and defeat The Grabber. The Grabber’s brother, Max, discovers where Finney is hidden and tries to harm him, but Finney escapes and sets up a trap with the help of The Grabber’s previous victims.  In a final showdown, The Grabber falls into a pit and gets killed with a phone cord.

The Black Phone represents The Grabber’s guilt and his past sins, which he’s been ignoring. The phone serves as a symbol of his evil deeds catching up with him. In a poignant moment, the phone is used by Finney and the other victims to orchestrate The Grabber’s demise.  The movie also deals with themes of bullying and the power of standing up against violence.

Finney, despite being a victim of bullying and abuse, gains strength from the other victims and confronts The Grabber, ultimately overcoming his fear. In the end, “The Black Phone” is not just a horror movie but a story of hope, community, and the triumph of good over evil. While there are talks of a sequel, the ending of the movie provides a sense of closure, making it challenging to continue the story without carefully handling the plot.

The Black Phone Plot

In 1978, a scary person known as “The Grabber” was kidnapping and killing kids in a Denver neighborhood. Two siblings, Finney and Gwen, live there with their mean, drunk dad. Finney gets bullied at school, but he has a friend named Robin who helps him. Another friend, Bruce, disappears, and Gwen has dreams about it. The police talk to Gwen, thinking she knows something, but she won’t say.

Then, Robin is taken by The Grabber, and later, it’s Finney’s turn. He wakes up in a room with a phone that’s not working. He answers it and talks to kids who were taken before. They tell him about a way to escape. But it’s not easy. The Grabber plays a scary game with the kids, making sure they stay in the basement.

Finney talks to the other kids on the phone, learns to fight, and makes a plan. Meanwhile, Gwen has a dream about where Finney is, and she tells the police. They find the house where Finney is being kept. The Grabber tries to hurt Finney, but Finney fights back and wins. He gets out of the house and reunites with Gwen. Their dad is sorry for how he treated them, and Finney is brave at school.
